South Australia nomination for the subclass 190 visa

Permanent residence with South Australia Government nomination. ROIs opened on 22 October 2026 for people living and working in South Australia whose visa expires by 31 January 2027; offshore candidates are invited from their EOI.

The South Australia Government nominates skilled migrants for the Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa under the General Skilled Migration program. The program is administered by Skilled and Business Migration (Migration SA) and uses a Registration of Interest (ROI) mechanism for onshore candidates. South Australia's 2025-26 allocation was 1,350 subclass 190 and 900 subclass 491 places. On 22 October 2026 South Australia opened Registrations of Interest (ROIs) for people living and working in South Australia whose current visa expires by 31 January 2027. Offshore candidates do not submit an ROI and are invited from their EOI in SkillSelect. All applicants must have a current EOI lodged in SkillSelect. Invitations focus on candidates working in the priority sectors building and construction, defence, education, engineering, health and manufacturing; high-ranking candidates in other sectors may also be considered. As at 15 October 2026, Home Affairs had not yet published 2026-27 state allocations and recorded no 190 nominations by South Australia from 1 July to 31 August 2026.

State nomination is one stage of a two-stage process. South Australia assesses applicants against state-specific criteria; the Department of Home Affairs then assesses the federal visa application following nomination. The strategic question is whether your profile matches South Australia's priority sectors and stream requirements well enough to receive nomination, with places limited.

SA 190 eligibility

Federal eligibility

You must meet the standard 190 federal criteria: under 45 at invitation, a suitable skills assessment, at least Competent English as Home Affairs defines it, at least 65 points on the points test (including the five-point nomination points), and health and character requirements. South Australia's own streams require you to be under 45 when state nomination is approved.

Nominated occupation

Your nominated occupation must be on South Australia's Skilled Occupation List, which shows the streams under which each occupation is eligible.

Selection mechanism

Under the 2025-26 settings, South Australia's streams were South Australian Graduates, Skilled Employment in South Australia, Outer Regional Skilled Employment and Offshore. Onshore candidates submit an ROI and wait to be invited; graduates of South Australian providers may be eligible for nomination faster than other candidates. Offshore candidates do not submit an ROI and are selected directly from EOIs that list South Australia first. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an invitation. These settings may change for 2026-27.

Priority sectors

For 2025-26, South Australia prioritised building and construction, defence, education, engineering, health and manufacturing, and said high-ranking candidates in other sectors may also be considered. Candidates in priority sectors with a 190-eligible occupation may be invited for the 190; others may be invited for the 491. For 2026-27, invitations focus on candidates working in the priority sectors building and construction, defence, education, engineering, health and manufacturing; high-ranking candidates in other sectors may also be considered.

How South Australia selection works

SA's 190 selection process operates through Migration SA and is documented at migration.sa.gov.au. In 2025-26 South Australia issued invitations on an ongoing basis and published invitation updates, with the last formal round on 21 May 2026. An invited candidate applies for state nomination, and a nomination generates a federal invitation and a 60-day window in which to lodge the complete visa application.

For 2026-27, South Australia opened ROIs on 22 October 2026 for people living and working in South Australia whose current visa expires by 31 January 2027, and invites offshore candidates from their EOI. Confirm the current settings with South Australia before lodging an EOI or ROI.

If your application is refused

Refusal at the South Australia state nomination stage is a state administrative decision. Internal review or reconsideration may be available depending on the SA program's guidelines. State nomination decisions are not directly reviewable by the Administrative Review Tribunal.

Refusal of the federal visa following nomination triggers merits review rights to the ART within statutory time limits, and judicial review to the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia on grounds of jurisdictional error. Time limits are strict.

Common questions

How does the SA 190 nomination process work?
South Australia's program is run by Skilled and Business Migration (Migration SA). Every applicant needs an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect with South Australia as the first preferred state or territory. Onshore applicants also submit a Registration of Interest (ROI) through the Skilled and Business Migration portal; offshore applicants do not, and are selected from their EOIs. Selected candidates are invited to apply for state nomination. A nomination in SkillSelect triggers the Home Affairs invitation, and the visa application must be lodged within 60 days.
Is South Australia accepting 190 ROIs now?
In part. As at 15 October 2026, Home Affairs had not yet published 2026-27 state allocations and recorded no subclass 190 nominations by South Australia from 1 July to 31 August 2026. For reference, South Australia's 2025-26 allocation was 1,350 subclass 190 places.
Which occupation list applies?
Your nominated occupation must be on South Australia's Skilled Occupation List, which applies to 190 and 491 nomination and shows which streams each occupation is eligible under. The list may change for the 2026-27 program.
What are the priority sectors?
For the 2025-26 program, South Australia prioritised candidates in building and construction, defence, education, engineering, health and manufacturing, and said high-ranking candidates in other sectors may also be considered. Candidates in priority sectors whose occupation is eligible for the 190 may be invited for the 190; others may be invited for the 491. For 2026-27, invitations focus on candidates working in the priority sectors building and construction, defence, education, engineering, health and manufacturing; high-ranking candidates in other sectors may also be considered.
What residency or employment is required?
Under the 2025-26 settings, the Skilled Employment in South Australia stream required living in South Australia for the last 12 months and 12 months of full-time work (at least 30 hours a week) related to the nominated occupation. South Australian graduates needed 6 months of residence and full-time work, with study requirements. Offshore candidates needed at least three years of skilled work experience in the last five years. These settings may change for 2026-27.
What if my SA 190 nomination is refused?
State nomination decisions are administrative decisions of the South Australia Government. Internal review may be available depending on the SA program's published guidelines. State nomination decisions are not directly reviewable by the Administrative Review Tribunal in the way federal visa decisions are. If federal visa refusal occurs at the post-nomination stage, ART merits review and Federal Circuit and Family Court judicial review are available within strict statutory time limits.

Information current as at 27 October 2026. South Australia program settings, occupation lists, and allocations are revised through the program year. Confirm current settings at migration.sa.gov.au before lodging an EOI or ROI.
